Teaching Children to Share and Reuse
Easy ways to teach children generosity and respect for belongings by involving them in giving away toys, books and clothes.
Children learn values from what they see and do. Giving away things they no longer use is one of the simplest ways to teach sharing, kindness and care for belongings. Here is how to make it a natural part of family life.
Involve them in the choice
Do not secretly remove toys while they are at school. Instead, sit together and let them choose what to pass on. When children take part in the decision, they feel proud and not upset.
Explain the reason in simple words
You might say, “These toys are not being used, and another child would love to play with them.” Keep the message friendly and positive. Avoid making them feel guilty about having too much.
Start small
Begin with one box or a few books. Younger children find it difficult to let go, so let them keep a small number of special favourites.
Let them see the result
When possible, let your child help pack the items and take photos for the listing. Some children enjoy meeting the new owner, if you are with them and the meeting place is safe. Seeing a happy face makes the lesson real.
Clean and prepare together
Wash soft toys, wipe plastic toys and check that nothing is broken. This teaches children to respect what they pass on, and shows that a gift should be in good condition.
Make it a regular habit
Before birthdays and festivals, when new things arrive, suggest choosing a few old items to give away. This creates a healthy balance, and avoids a house full of unused things.
Teach the value of things
Talk about how toys, clothes and books are made, and how much work goes into them. When children understand this, they handle their belongings with more care and waste less.
Teach online safety
It is the adults who should post and handle messages. Explain to children that they should never share an address, a phone number or personal details with strangers online.
Praise the effort
Thank your child for being generous. Positive attention helps them connect giving with good feelings. Over time, they will start making these choices by themselves.
A small act with a big lesson
A single box of toys may seem minor. But the idea that we can share what we have, and that things can have a second life, can stay with a child for many years.
