What to Do With Old Clothes, Books and Gadgets Instead of Throwing Them Away
Smart, simple ideas for passing on old clothes, books, electronics and household items so they can be used again.
Before something goes into the bin, it is worth asking a simple question: could somebody else use this? Here are practical ideas for common items.
Old clothes
Clothes that are clean and in good condition are among the most useful things to give. Wash and fold them, and sort them by size and type, such as school uniforms, winter wear or children’s clothes. Posting them in a bundle with a clear photo makes it easy for someone to say yes.
Clothes that are torn or stained can still be useful. Cut them into cleaning cloths, or use them as covers for plants and furniture while painting.
Books
Books are easy to pass on and highly appreciated by students and readers. Textbooks, story books and reference books can all find a new home. Add the title and the edition in your listing, because students often look for specific ones. Children’s books are often in great demand.
Phones, chargers and small gadgets
Before giving a phone or tablet away, back up your data, sign out of every account and reset it to factory settings. Remove the SIM and memory card. Include the charger if you have it. For broken or very old electronics, look for a proper electronic waste collection point in your area, because they should not go in with normal waste.
Furniture and household items
Tables, chairs, shelves, fans, mixers and utensils can all be given away if they still work. Mention measurements for furniture, and say clearly whether the person needs to bring a vehicle or helpers.
Toys and baby items
Wash toys and check that nothing is broken or has loose small parts. Be honest about the condition, and note that safety items such as car seats should only be passed on if they are in perfect condition and have not been in an accident.
Items to avoid giving away
- Opened medicines or anything past its use date
- Damaged electrical items that could be unsafe
- Anything that is broken beyond use
- Items that need a licence or are illegal to pass on
A simple habit
Keep a basket at home for things you want to pass on. When it is full, take photos and post a listing. A few minutes of effort can give your things a second life, and keep useful items out of the bin.
